Each October, we celebrate seasonal changes that deliver an abundance of color to our community. While we are surrounded by so much natural beauty, it can be difficult to acknowledge anything that would make us see our community as less than idyllic.

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, a time when we are reminded that not all change is swift and certain. Social change can be slow, especially when facing the deeply rooted beliefs and behaviors that allow gender-based violence to continue.

Although public awareness continues to expand, the problem persists. As a community, we continue to respond and work toward positive change that will ensure women and girls live free from harm by those who claim to love them – change that will create safe and thriving communities for everyone.

Here are a few ways we can all make a meaningful difference:

  • Reach out to family, friends and neighbors experiencing domestic abuse; be a safe person to be around
  • Believe and support survivors so they feel safe, valued and whole
  • Hold those who harm others accountable
  • Speak up when you hear language/see behaviors that belittle, humiliate or harm others
  • Be a role model for kindness, compassion, respect and inclusivity

Let’s continue to take action and make advancements to end domestic abuse. The result will be safe and thriving communities that acknowledge and value the full humanity in all people.
