Practicing respectful relationships

In respectful relationships, you feel safe, valued and accepted. Decisions are made together and you feel comfortable discussing any concern, problem or issue. You enjoy spending time with one another, but can be happy apart.

Elements of respectful relationships:

• Open, honest conversations
• Actively listening to each other
• Compromising
• Speaking kindly to and about each other
• Giving each other space
• Supporting each other’s careers, interests and hobbies
• Building each other up
• Honoring each other’s boundaries
• Valuing each others feelings and needs

By practicing respect with our loved ones – as well as with friends, neighbors and co-workers – we develop stronger relationships and enrich our lives. The strength of our connections with others helps create a more resilient community where all people feel supported, connected and free from harm.  That is the potential of respectful relationships.
