Leslie Neilson, the owner of inspired living in Boyne City, has created and nurtured two in store, on-going programs that raise funds for the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM).  From April 2010 to October 2011, the combined programs raised more than $1,000.

Neilson donates 10% of store sales on the first Thursday of every month to the WRCNM, including those made through her website, baliinspiredliving.com.  Customers are reminded of the monthly fundraiser by inspired living staff and through the store’s newsletter.

The store also gives reusable bags to customers who sign up to be a H.I.P. Club member, imprinted on one side with the inspired living logo and on the reverse side with, “I’m H.I.P. are you?”  When customers return to the store with their bag, Neilson donates $1 to WRCNM – even if no purchase is made on that particular visit.

“It was easy—a no-brainer,” said Neilson when asked why she selected the Women’s Center to benefit from these two fundraisers.  Neilson said she started attending one of the WRCNM’s free community playgroups with her first child.  It was an opportunity for her child to play with other children while she networked with other parents.  “I really believe that I am a better mom, wife, friend and person because of what I learned by attending playgroup,” said Neilson.  She also got to know longtime playgroup facilitator Mary Biagini, who has since retired.  “It really began by just getting to know ‘Mary B.’ and going to playgroup,” said Neilson.   According to Neilson, the fundraisers are a way to give back to an organization that had an impact on her life and, as a result, many people in her life.

WRCNM Executive Director, Jan Mancinelli pointed out how important it is for the non-profit agency to receive donations from the business community, organizations and individuals. “Donations, such as those from Leslie at Inspired Living, represent unrestricted dollars which help pay for services our agency provides that grants do not support, like community playgroups, counseling and many of the domestic abuse and sexual assault services,” said Mancinelli.

By the way, H.I.P. stands for happy, inspired person — which is a perfect description of Neilson.
