Char-Em United Way held their annual celebration breakfast at Odawa Casino on Thursday, June 12. The breakfast is a time to thank donors, recognize volunteers, award community investment allocations and present the John Newton awards for service.
The Newton award is named for the late John Newton, a past United Way board member and local banker. The award recognizes both an individual and an organization for actions that significantly enhance health and human services in Emmet and Charlevoix counties.
Jan Mancinelli, executive director with the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM) received this year’s Newton award for an individual. During the past 36 years at the WRCNM, Mancinelli has been instrumental in helping to create one of the largest, most comprehensive, professional and multifaceted women’s service organizations in Michigan.
During those years, Mancinelli helped grow the organization in response to community need, expanding the service delivery to locations in five northern Michigan counties. The WRCNM provides programs and services such as domestic abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, child sexual assault, counseling, child care, preschool, employment and education and community playgroups. These services are relied on by thousands of individuals every year.
Mancinelli was also instrumental in spearheading the purchase and reconstruction of a home to use as a domestic abuse shelter for women and children, which was accomplished in 1982. Since then, the Safe Home has served as a secure, supportive and caring residence for thousands of women and their children.
An important aspect of Mancinelli’s work includes violence prevention. She has spent countless hours meeting with local leaders and presenting to schools, organizations, law enforcement officials and social and civic groups. The message is one of awareness, education and violence prevention.
Mancinelli has made a concerted effort to be actively involved in the local community, as well as at the state and national levels. She has participated, and held leadership positions, on multiple boards such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Charlevoix County, Little Traverse Conservancy, Michigan Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence, Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce and Zonta Club of Petoskey.
Additionally, she has served on a multitude of advisory councils, commissions and leadership teams such as Char-Em ISD Alternative Program for Teen Parents, Char-Em Teen Health Project, Emmet 20/20, McLaren Northern Michigan Community Advisory Council, Resort Township Planning Commission and the Status of Women in Michigan Advisory Committee for the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.
Some of Mancinelli’s other honors include: Woman of the Year by the Business and Professional Women of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, Athena Award by the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce, Trailblazers Award by the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, Apple Blossom Award by the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and a State of Michigan Special Tribute for community service.
During the awards breakfast, the Women’s Resource Center was also named as one of organizations receiving CEUW community investment allocations to help fund domestic abuse services and Children’s Learning Center scholarships.
