Our collective actions can help end domestic abuse

Domestic Abuse Awareness Month is observed nationally every October. It is an annual reminder that countless survivors, family members, friends and communities continue to bear the burden and inhumanity of this serious problem.

During October, Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan reminds community members that together we can create positive change in ending domestic abuse by pledging to take one action (#1action) in our everyday lives. Our collective actions can accomplish so much more than what one person can do alone.

Here are a few ways community members can take action:

  • Listen to and believe survivors and respect their choices.
  • Speak out against victim-blaming, discrimination and violence as a way to support survivors who already face overwhelming obstacles on their path to safety and justice.
  • Advocate for respectful relationships based on honesty, compromise, kindness and trust.
  • Inspire others by sharing your #1action on social media.

With every action — big or small — you are choosing to be part of the solution in ending domestic abuse and helping create safe and thriving communities for everyone.

Together, we can create communities in which domestic abuse is unacceptable.

Together, we can honor the rights of all people to live free from harm.
