Prevention is possible through every day actions
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year, we invite community members to focus their attention on this important issue beyond a single month because the impacts are felt daily.
Most people realize the traumatic and varied impact of sexual violence on survivors and their families. The entire community is also adversely affected by its presence. Sexual violence creates a climate of fear, anger and disbelief in workplaces, schools and within our community. Additionally, sexual violence generates financial costs such as criminal justice and medical expenses, crisis and mental health service fees, as well as the loss of potential accomplishments of victims.
Preventing such a far-reaching and prevalent social issue as sexual violence may seem overwhelming or even impossible. This way of thinking implies that there isn’t a solution — or if there is, we can’t achieve it. But we can and we are. There are many practical steps that are currently being taken in our homes, neighborhoods, schools, faith communities and workplaces. But there are many more things we can do to promote safety, respect and accountability.
Prevention starts with challenging victim-blaming and believing the survivors when they share their story. Every day, individuals can model supportive relationships and behaviors, call out harmful attitudes and challenge the societal acceptance of sexual violence. Communities and businesses can also take action to implement policies that promote safety, respect and equality.
We agree with this year’s theme: prevention IS possible. Join us in helping everyone see their role in preventing sexual violence throughout the year. You can learn more on the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s website at www.nsvrc.org/saam.
