Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM) recognized Deputy Skyler Skrobecki of the Antrim County Sheriff’s Office for his work in promoting domestic violence victim safety and offender accountability. Skrobecki is one of five law enforcement representatives to receive the Excellence in Service award in the WRCNM’s five-county service area.

Kristina Droste, assistant prosecuting attorney with the Antrim County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said there are many reasons Skrobecki is deserving of this recognition, noting his thorough, dedicated and attentive manner in handling domestic violence cases. Skrobecki’s ability to sort out the credibility of witnesses and recognize batterer behavior and how that affects both the victim’s and batterer’s explanations of events were also cited. Skrobecki is also well aware of the danger to and effect on children involved in domestic violence situations.

“Each of those reasons boils down to one: how much he cares about his job and the victims he encounters. The thoroughness of his investigations is a direct result of his dedication to helping victims and holding perpetrators accountable,” Droste said. “Most of all, Deputy Skrobecki recognizes all of us can always improve our efforts in the fight against domestic violence and while he is doing an excellent job already, he is always striving to improve.”

Antrim County Sheriff, Daniel Bean also had praise for Skrobecki’s work. “Deputy Skrobecki works hard to protect the victims of domestic violence,” said Bean. “He does an excellent job in recognizing the signs of battered women and has shown how the crimes have an effect on children. His reporting of this type of crime shows that he has a real heart for victims and works hard to protect them.”

WRCNM counselor/advocates select recipients of the Excellence in Service award because they often work cooperatively with law enforcement on domestic abuse situations in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet and Otsego counties. Honorees in other counties are: Officer Scott Gosciak, Petoskey Department of Public Safety; Deputy Nathan Kaminski, Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office; Sergeant Brandon Blumke, Tuscarora Township Police Department; and Trooper Brock Artfitch, Gaylord Michigan State Police Post.
