The 8th annual Harbor Springs Kiwanis Steve Miller Essay Contest was won by Maye Burns for an essay she wrote about the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM). Harbor Springs 5th grade students pick a local charity and write about why that charity should receive a check from the Kiwanis Club.

In an excerpt of Maye’s essay she writes, “My best friend, Jilly and I did a Zonta Fashion Show which raises money for the WRC. We decided to participate in this because we realized how important it is to take part in our community and help others. Along with that, at the beginning of every school year, my family and I go out to buy the kids in the Safe Home school supplies (pencils, coloring supplies, notebooks, pens, etc.). We do that so they can get an education with the materials that they need. The WRC is a great place in the community and I don’t know what most people would do without it.”

Maye’s parents are Stacey and Kevin Burns; Stacey is the WRCNM Educational and Employment Services Coordinator, and Kevin is a 100 Men Campaign contributor and volunteers on the Violence Prevention Team.

Maye’s name will be engraved on a plaque of annual winners; her essay earned the WRCNM a $100 donation from the Harbor Springs Kiwanis Club.
